Abu Dhabi Canvas Community Tour Merges Art With Sustainable Transport
The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT) in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) recently orchestrated the ‘Abu Dhabi Canvas Community Tour’, a unique event that saw nearly 400 cyclists traverse a scenic 30 km route. This route was not just any path but one that highlighted the beauty and creativity of Abu Dhabi through over 10 bus shelters, each adorned with vibrant murals. These artworks, created by Emirati and locally based artists, depicted various themes such as community, mobility, culture, growth, and urban planning.
The tour was a highlight of the Abu Dhabi Mobility Week, an event aimed at reshaping the future of transportation within the Emirate, running until 1 May 2024. The initiative underlines the commitment of DMT to foster community involvement and to blend art with public engagement, thereby enhancing the city’s focus on seamless mobility and the well-being of its citizens and residents.

Abdulla Al Marzouqi, Director General of Integrated Transport Centre, an affiliate of DMT, expressed his gratitude towards the participants for their role in the success of this initiative. He emphasized the event as a kick-off for more such initiatives aimed at community involvement and mobility enhancement.
Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, highlighted the significance of such grassroots initiatives. He pointed out that while Abu Dhabi is globally recognized for its elite sporting events, fostering local community engagement through sports is equally vital. The tour not only celebrated grassroots sports but also underscored ADSC’s dedication to promoting community well-being.
The event also aimed at encouraging sustainable transportation practices among the public, particularly cycling. It concluded with a community gathering in Souq Al Mina, where cyclists, local businesses, and residents celebrated the success of the Abu Dhabi Canvas Community Tour. This celebration was a testament to the city's dynamic spirit and its commitment to blending mobility, health, arts, culture, and community engagement.
This initiative by DMT and ADSC serves as a shining example of how public art can play a crucial role in urban planning and community engagement. By transforming ordinary bus shelters into canvases for artistic expression, Abu Dhabi Canvas has not only beautified the city but also sparked conversations about culture, growth, and sustainability among its residents.
