Abu Dhabi To Restrict Bus Traffic On Sheikh Zayed Street For Safety

In a significant move to improve traffic flow and safety on one of Abu Dhabi's key thoroughfares, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ and under the guidance of the Joint Committee for Traffic Safety, has announced a new traffic regulation. This regulation will see the prohibition of bus traffic, encompassing all types and sizes, on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, stretching from Sheikh Zayed Bridge to Sheikh Zayed Tunnel. This directive, affecting both directions of the roadway around the clock, is set to be implemented starting Monday, April 15th, 2024, and will be in force even on weekends and official holidays.

The ITC has specified that certain buses will not be subject to this ban. School buses, public transport buses, and those providing access to work sites within the affected area will be allowed to continue their operations as usual. This exemption aims to ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted while striving to achieve the primary goal of this initiative: to enhance traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of accidents on this crucial stretch of road.

This decision aligns with ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and efficiency of Abu Dhabi's transportation network. The ITC has emphasized the importance of adherence to traffic regulations by operators and drivers alike. It highlighted the role of increased road surveillance and the use of smart systems in monitoring compliance. In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police, the ITC will focus on identifying non-compliant buses and enforcing penalties as necessary to support this initiative.

The introduction of this traffic regulation reflects a proactive approach to managing the city's growing transportation needs. By restricting bus traffic in a busy section of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, authorities aim to mitigate congestion and enhance safety for all road users. This measure is part of a broader strategy to optimize Abu Dhabi's transport infrastructure, ensuring it can accommodate future demands while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
