Abu Dhabi To Host Bascom Palmer Eye Institute's First International Facility For Advanced Ophthalmic Care

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has partnered with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to open its first international facility in Abu Dhabi. Known as the top eye hospital in the U.S. for 24 years, Bascom Palmer will bring its expertise to the UAE. The centre is set to open in November 2025, enhancing Abu Dhabi's reputation as a hub for specialised healthcare.

Dr Noura Al Ghaithi, Under-Secretary of DoH, highlighted that this collaboration aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to host leading global medical institutions. She emphasised that the emirate’s regulations and infrastructure support innovation and collaboration, ensuring top-tier care for residents and patients in the region.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Opens in Abu Dhabi

The new facility will be located in Mohammed Bin Zayed City and cover 70,000 square feet. It will feature gemstone-inspired architecture symbolising precision in eye care. Equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical technologies, it will include 31 examination rooms, three operating theatres, laser suites, and specialised departments like an Ocular Surface Disease Laboratory.

Dr Abdul Rahim Jaffar, Board Member of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute – Abu Dhabi, stated that establishing the institute reflects the UAE leadership’s vision for top-notch healthcare infrastructure and specialised care. The centre will offer comprehensive ophthalmic services such as treatment for retinal diseases, glaucoma, ocular oncology, paediatric ophthalmology, and complex orbital disorders.

Dipen J. Parekh, CEO for UHealth and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Miami, noted that this partnership signifies a global expansion of Bascom Palmer’s excellence. It extends the University of Miami Health System’s reach to serve more patients worldwide and train more physicians globally.

This development underscores Abu Dhabi's strategy to attract renowned medical institutions and create a globally connected healthcare ecosystem. By integrating advanced technology and patient-centred innovation with international best practices, it aims to elevate care standards across all medical disciplines.

The facility will also provide educational facilities and advanced patient amenities to enhance patient experience further. This strategic collaboration between Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and August Medical from SOZA Group highlights Abu Dhabi's commitment to pioneering research and international medical education.
