Abu Dhabi Launches Barakatna Initiative. What This Means For Senior Citizens And Caregivers

The Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi, alongside the Family Development Foundation, has introduced six services under the "Barakatna" Initiative. This initiative aims to improve life quality for senior citizens and their caregivers, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's community care system. It aligns with the "Year of Community" goals, focusing on family support and recognising seniors' contributions to society.

Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development, highlighted that "Barakatna" reflects Emirati values and leadership's dedication to senior citizens' welfare within supportive communities. He stated, "We designed this initiative following an in-depth review of the challenges facing caregivers, with the goal of easing their daily burdens and empowering them to carry out their noble responsibilities toward their parents."

The initiative offers six integrated services. One service allows primary caregivers to request temporary care for elderly parents needing assistance. The Family Development Foundation provides up to 8 hours of care per day, once a week, for 48 days annually. This helps caregivers manage personal tasks and family time more effectively.

The Abu Dhabi Housing Authority contributes three services: home improvements for seniors, extending housing loan repayment by five years, and facilitating housing grants for families wishing to live closer together. These services aim to reduce financial stress on caregivers while fostering family unity.

Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of both the Department of Municipalities and Transport and the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, described "Barakatna" as: "A practical solution for developing advanced residential infrastructure tailored to meet the needs of senior citizens." The focus is on creating sustainable communities that enhance residents' quality of life.

The Government Empowerment Authority offers a service allowing caregivers flexible work arrangements within government entities. Ahmad Tamim Hisham Al Kuttab, Chairman of the Government Empowerment Authority – Abu Dhabi, noted: "This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to senior citizens and to supporting caregivers in the workplace." This service helps balance professional duties with caregiving responsibilities.

Mariam Mohammed Al Rumaithi from the Family Development Foundation emphasised their role under H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak's guidance. The Foundation aims to provide psychosocial support for seniors and ensure their societal integration. She said: "The 'Barakatna’ initiative contributes to improving the quality of life for caregivers by offering practical, tailored solutions that reflect their day-to-day reality."

The Department of Municipalities and Transport offers a service allowing families structural home modifications for senior members' comfort. This ensures private living spaces are available within homes for seniors' needs.

Hamad Hareb Al-Muhairi from the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority expressed pride in contributing to "Barakatna." He stated that they are committed to providing flexible housing solutions that support family stability and social wellbeing through continuous leadership guidance.

The Department of Community Development views "Barakatna" as a starting point for broader family-focused policies aimed at empowering Emirati households. These efforts ensure ongoing social development and improved quality of life across Abu Dhabi.
