Abu Dhabi Strengthens Urban Planning Ties With Shanghai And Hangzhou Through Innovation
A high-level delegation from the UAE, led by Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), recently visited Shanghai and Hangzhou. The trip aimed to enhance municipal relations through meetings, site visits, and technology demonstrations with key figures from government, academia, and industry sectors.
In Shanghai, Al Shorafa engaged in discussions with Zhang Xiaohong, Vice Mayor of Shanghai. They focused on strategic municipal cooperation and future priorities while showcasing urban planning innovations in both cities. "This visit has strengthened our resolve to deliver urban environments that elevate daily life, grounded in public service and informed by constructive collaboration," Al Shorafa stated.

The delegation participated in a technical workshop with Tongji Architectural Design Group and Tongji University. This session explored integrated transport, landscape, and infrastructure design models. Tours of The Bund and Rockbund provided insights into heritage continuation efforts. They also assessed similar developments at Yangpu Riverside.
The group examined modular housing systems with Q Home, a leader in industrialised building solutions. They also explored AI applications in energy storage at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Centre. Advanced construction technologies were showcased by Zevo Technology, including 3D printing for bridges and infrastructure using over 60% recycled materials.
At the Shanghai World Expo China Pavilion, Rechsand Technology Group demonstrated their Sponge City Rainwater Purification and Reuse Programme. This initiative uses advanced materials made from desert sand to support sustainable development through porous technologies.
Innovative Urban Planning in Hangzhou
In Hangzhou, a design session with ‘100architects’ focused on placemaking and youth-centric public space design. The delegation then visited the Hangzhou City Planning Exhibition Hall to observe immersive models and AI-driven urban planning simulations. These demonstrated the city's approach to infrastructure development and adaptive urban regeneration.
The visit included Hamad Hareb AlMuhairi from the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority; Eng Maysarah Mahmoud Eid from the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre; and Rashed Musabbeh Al Manei from Al Ain City Municipality. Their participation highlighted Abu Dhabi's commitment to learning from global best practices.
This visit provided valuable insights into innovative urban planning strategies that can be adapted for Abu Dhabi's future projects. By embracing these learnings, Abu Dhabi aims to create connected neighbourhoods that honour heritage while integrating modern advancements.
