Abu Dhabi Partners With Archer Aviation To Launch Electric Air Taxis By 2025
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has recently inked a significant framework agreement with Archer Aviation Inc., a frontrunner in the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft sector. This partnership was unveiled at the DRIFTx mobility event held at Yas Marina Circuit, spotlighting the latest advancements in urban mobility and fostering sector-wide dialogue and innovation. This collaboration is set to fast-track Archer's anticipated commercial air taxi operations in the UAE, with a launch timeline as early as next year, marking a significant step in urban air mobility.
Under this agreement, Abu Dhabi is poised to become a leading global hub for urban air mobility, commencing air taxi operations with Archer's Midnight aircraft. The deal encompasses vertiport construction, operational support for air taxi services in the UAE, and local manufacturing of the Midnight aircraft. Moreover, ADIO commits to local workforce development programs to nurture Emirati talent and support Archer's establishment of its international headquarters and Centre of Excellence in Abu Dhabi.

Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer, expressed that this agreement with Abu Dhabi is crucial for the company's commercialization efforts across the Emirates. It not only catalyzes the launch of their electric air taxi service in the UAE by late 2025 but also highlights Abu Dhabi's dedication to becoming a global urban air mobility hub. Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Abu Dhabi's role in propelling the global launch of electric air taxis and expressing enthusiasm for supporting Archer's growth and operational expansion in the UAE.
The partnership will see ADIO aiding in the development of vertiports at strategic locations across Abu Dhabi, enhancing the infrastructure needed for Archer to expand its operations. This agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier in 2023, marking six months of collaborative efforts between ADIO and Archer. It aligns with ADIO’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility worldwide.
Additionally, Archer will work closely with its partners, including its early investor Mubadala, Falcon Aviation, Air Chateau, and GAL-AMMROC, to accelerate regional progress. These partners have announced plans to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul support for Archer’s eVTOL aircraft.
Archer aims to revolutionize urban travel by offering a sustainable, low-noise alternative to traditional commutes. The Midnight aircraft is designed for quick successive flights with minimal charging time needed between journeys. This initiative promises to transform 60- to 90-minute car commutes into efficient 10- to 20-minute flights, positioning electric air taxis as a competitive option against ground transportation.
