Abo Noghta Castles In Saudi Arabia Named One Of The Best Tourism Villages For 2024 By UN Tourism Organization

The United Nations Tourism Organization has recognised Abo Noghta Castles in Tabab, Saudi Arabia, as one of the "Best Tourism Villages for 2024." This announcement was made at a ceremony in Cartagena, Colombia, attended by Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb and other global tourism leaders. The recognition highlights the historical and cultural importance of Saudi Arabia's diverse destinations.

Minister Al Khateeb expressed his enthusiasm about this achievement, noting that it underscores the deep heritage and cultural value of Abo Noghta Castles. He explained that this aligns with Saudi Arabia’s vision to become a leading global tourism destination, offering unique experiences. The inclusion of these castles in the prestigious list acknowledges their historical significance, having stood for centuries.

The Ministry of Tourism worked closely with other government agencies to support the nomination process. This collaboration reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to showcasing its rural heritage globally. The recognition aims to promote lesser-known treasures like Abo Noghta Castles to international audiences, highlighting their role in the cultural identity of the Aseer region.

Abo Noghta Castles are among the most significant historical landmarks in Tabab. Located 25 kilometers northwest of Abha at an elevation of about 2,400 meters above sea level, these six forts and palaces are built from mountain stone. They reflect the authentic heritage of the Aseer region and offer visitors stunning views along Wadi Tabb Al-Khasib.

Tabab is a town rich in history and culture, home to over 150 villages interspersed with valleys like Wadi Tabab, Al-Mughoth, and Dubwai. Known for its fertile lands, it produces various seasonal crops, enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination. Historical landmarks such as ancient mosques, castles, and palaces attract visitors to villages like Al-Hudhud, Zeina, and Al-Gaul.

The UN Tourism Organization's initiative aims to spotlight rural destinations using tourism for sustainable development. By recognising Abo Noghta Castles as one of the "Best Tourist Villages," the program seeks to create job opportunities and preserve cultural traditions while fostering innovation in rural areas.

This recognition not only celebrates the historical significance of Abo Noghta Castles but also highlights their commitment to sustainability. By meeting social, economic, and environmental goals, they align with global Sustainable Development Goals. This reinforces Saudi Arabia’s dedication to preserving its cultural and natural heritage while fostering growth in its tourism sector.

During the ceremony in Colombia, Saeed bin Saud Abu Nuqta Al-Mutahami received a commemorative gift on behalf of Abo Noghta Castles' board of directors. This honour underscores the importance of preserving historical landmarks like these castles that play a vital role in defining the cultural identity of regions like Aseer.
