Experience Abha's Al-Muftaha District: A Cultural And Artistic Hub This Ramadan

Al-Muftaha District, located in the heart of Abha, has long been a cultural and historical landmark. This Ramadan, it has become a lively tourist and cultural centre, attracting hundreds of visitors daily. The district offers a unique mix of recreational, artistic, and heritage experiences. Organised by the Aseer Development Authority's Tourism Destinations Sector, these festivities provide diverse activities for all.

The Art Village, established 35 years ago in the district's northern part, is a popular destination for families and tourists alike. It hosts exhibitions and artistic displays that celebrate the region's creative heritage. Visitors can explore various forms of art that reflect the rich culture of the area.

Cultural and Artistic Hub in Abha

Al-Muftaha also boasts a modern theatre with a seating capacity exceeding 3,500 people. It features advanced audiovisual technology to enhance performances. This state-of-the-art facility adds a contemporary touch to the district's traditional charm.

The Souq Al Thulatha, or Tuesday Market, is one of Aseer's oldest traditional markets. It is named after its weekly gatherings on Tuesdays. Designed in an oval shape, it includes pedestrian-friendly walkways and open-air stalls displaying local handicrafts and traditional products.

The architecture in Al-Muftaha preserves Abha's distinct building traditions. Structures feature thick walls, small windows, and "raqf" plaster coatings to protect mud walls from rain while providing shade. These architectural elements contribute to the district's timeless appeal.

Several historic palaces further enhance Al-Muftaha's charm. They stand as testaments to the area's rich history and cultural significance. These palaces attract visitors interested in exploring the architectural beauty of past eras.

Traditional Craftsmanship

Historically, Al-Muftaha was known for sword making. Craftsmen sourced iron-rich sedimentary rocks from the Al-Soudah Mountains, located 20 kilometres northwest of Abha. Using traditional methods, they extracted iron to forge swords, daggers, and agricultural tools.

This blend of historical craftsmanship with modern attractions makes Al-Muftaha District a must-visit destination during Ramadan. Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences that highlight both the past and present cultural richness of this unique area.
