Makkah Conference Aims To Strengthen Moderation In Islamic Countries
The 9th Conference of Ministers of Awqaf (Endowments) and Islamic Affairs in Islamic Countries commenced today in Makkah. Hosted by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, the event focuses on "the role of endowments and Islamic affairs ministries in promoting and consolidating the principles and values of moderation." Representatives from 60 countries, including ministers, muftis, and heads of Islamic councils, are participating.
Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance and Executive Chairman of the conference, praised Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for his support. He emphasized Saudi Arabia's foundation on moderate principles and its leadership in promoting moderate Islam while combating extremism.

The conference agenda includes discussions on countering extremism and terrorism, safeguarding platforms from radical rhetoric, fostering coexistence and tolerance, refining religious discourse, strengthening moderation and balance, enhancing the concept of citizenship in Muslim countries, and addressing Islamic identity amidst cultural globalization.
Morocco's Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq highlighted his country's dedication to preserving religious teachings through mosque neutrality. He also stressed the importance of promoting moderation. Egypt's Minister of Endowments Osama Al-Azhari spoke about the need to combat extremism and violence. He emphasized countering extremist narratives based on shared values and belonging.
Gambia's Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs Hamat Bah commended Saudi Arabia's efforts to promote moderation globally. Oman's Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs Dr. Mohammed Bin Said Al Mamari addressed world challenges such as moral imbalances and the prevalence of hate speech.
The first session was led by Yemeni Minister of Endowments and Guidance Mohammed 'Aida Shabiba. This session focused on growing concerns regarding extremism and terrorism. It also discussed the crucial need to protect platforms from harmful rhetoric. Further sessions throughout the day will delve deeper into other critical issues.
The conference serves as a platform for leaders to discuss ways to foster coexistence and tolerance among different communities. It aims to refine religious discourse while strengthening moderation within Muslim countries.
This gathering underscores a collective commitment to addressing global challenges through dialogue and cooperation among Islamic nations. The emphasis is on promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding across diverse cultures.
