7th International Rain Enhancement Forum Explores Water Security And AI Innovations

The 7th International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF) began in Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The event featured a rich agenda of panel discussions and presentations. The first day celebrated the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP)'s 10th anniversary, showcasing its global leadership in scientific research and innovation.

Experts at the forum delved into regional and global water security issues, exploring advancements in weather modification and rain enhancement technologies. A significant focus was on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for weather modification, with high-level panels featuring experts from the UAE and beyond.

Exploring Water Security at Rain Enhancement Forum

The initial plenary session titled "Regional and Global Perspectives on Water Security" was led by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE's Minister of Climate Change and Environment. The session included top experts like Loïc Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, and Ayesha Al Ateeqi from the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.

Moderated by Tom Urquhart from Dubai Eye Radio, this session examined climate change impacts on water resources. Discussions highlighted how rising temperatures and extreme events affect water availability and quality. Participants explored strategies for sustainable water management amid climate uncertainties.

The second plenary session focused on AI's role in weather modification. Mohammed Bin Taliah from the UAE Government, Hasan Al Hosani from Bayanat, G42, Dr. Christian Ponder from Microsoft Research, USA, and moderator Tom Urquhart discussed AI's potential in climate forecasting and intervention activities.

This session emphasized AI's capabilities in enhancing climate adaptation strategies. Experts discussed collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to address water security challenges while mitigating climate change impacts.

The third session titled "Hybrid Ai-Physics-Based Models and Data Science for Climate And Weather Research" began with an address by Andrew Jackson of Inception, a G42 company. It featured experts like Björn Stevens from Max Planck Institute and Marouane Temimi from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Moderated by Raha Hakimdavar from Georgetown University in Qatar, this session explored AI-physics model synergies for climate research. Discussions focused on improving forecasting accuracy through hybrid approaches while examining innovations in weather modification techniques.

The forum also included presentations by participating experts. Björn Stevens presented "EVE and the challenge of anticipating changing patterns of precipitation," followed by Marouane Temimi's talk on blending AI models with advanced sensing techniques for weather research.

Luca Delle Monache presented "A Hybrid Machine Learning Framework for Enhanced Precipitation Nowcasting." Organised by the National Center of Meteorology through UAEREP, the forum runs until 30th January 2025 at Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers. The event focuses on collaboration, innovation, capacity building, AI, and applied research.

The discussions underscored UAEREP’s decade-long journey as a centre of excellence in rain enhancement science. Dr. Nawal Al Hosany from IRENA and Dr. Steve Griffiths from American University of Sharjah shared insights during a Fireside Chat commemorating UAEREP’s achievements over ten years.
