UAE Cyber Security Council Warns 70% Of Smart Home Devices Are Vulnerable To Cyberattacks

The UAE is ramping up its digital security measures as cyber threats increase. The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has issued a warning that 70% of smart home devices could be at risk of cyberattacks if not adequately protected. This highlights the urgent need for improved security practices in homes.

Smart home technologies, including voice assistants, surveillance cameras, smart lighting, and air conditioning systems, are increasingly targeted by hackers. This is often due to users' lack of security awareness or reliance on default settings. Such vulnerabilities make these devices attractive targets for cybercriminals.

The CSC pointed out that risky behaviours like keeping voice assistants always active and connected to unsecured networks can expose sensitive data. Sharing the main Wi-Fi password with guests also poses significant risks, potentially allowing unauthorized access to control devices remotely.

Baby monitors are another concern highlighted by the council. These devices are common in many households but can be easily hacked if not secured properly. Hackers could use them to record conversations, track movements within the home, or even communicate directly with family members.

To reduce these risks, the CSC recommends using strong passwords and regularly updating smart device systems. Managing all smart systems through a single central device can also help minimize potential entry points for hackers.

The council advises turning off voice assistants when they are not needed and enabling built-in security and privacy settings on all devices. Separating smart device networks from the main household Wi-Fi is another effective strategy to enhance security.

Awareness Campaigns for Better Protection

This week, as part of its "Cyber Pulse" awareness campaign, the CSC is focusing on educating families about the threats facing smart home devices. The campaign aims to inform households about the importance of system updates and practical steps to counter cyber threats effectively.

The CSC's efforts underscore the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding digital spaces within homes. By following recommended practices, households can significantly reduce their vulnerability to cyberattacks and protect their personal information from potential intruders.
