Riyadh Welcomes Talents From 90 Countries For The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad
The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad 2024 commenced in Riyadh, featuring 333 participants from 90 countries and overseen by 260 global chemistry experts. The event is sponsored by the Minister of Education, Yousef Al-Benyan, and attended by Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa, Secretary-General of Mawhiba, and Murhaf Al-Madani, Assistant Minister of Education for Development.
Organised by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), the Olympiad runs until July 30, with final results announced on July 28. The event is held in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and King Saud University. Saudi Arabia has participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad since 2011, earning numerous awards and global recognition.

Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa highlighted that this year's event extends beyond academic competition to include a diverse program. This allows participants to interact with peers worldwide and immerse themselves in Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage. She stated that hosting the Olympiad in Riyadh underscores the Kingdom's dedication to advancing scientific knowledge, supporting talented youth, and fostering international cooperation aligned with Saudi Vision 2030.
Dr. Al-Hazzaa also praised the collaboration among strategic partners, particularly the Ministry of Education and King Saud University. Their combined efforts have fostered a culture of excellence and creativity. She acknowledged SABIC's exclusive sponsorship, which made the event possible. Dr. Al-Hazzaa emphasized that Saudi teams have won 43 awards in chemistry and 653 awards in STEM Olympiads, highlighting their potential to contribute significantly to the global scientific community.
She confirmed that building cross-border relationships is crucial for supporting the International Steering Committee. This committee coordinates efforts and aids local organisers to maintain high standards at the Olympiad. Dr. JL Kiappes, Chairman of the International Steering Committee, praised Saudi hospitality: "The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad will set a record for being the greatest Olympiad, but there is something we have already witnessed that is the hospitality of Saudi Arabia."
Historical Context
The International Chemistry Olympiad is an annual competition for high school students in chemistry, held in different countries since its inception in Prague in 1968. The current edition enjoys exclusive sponsorship from the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa expressed gratitude to the International Steering Committee for making this event a leading platform that enhances partnerships among gifted chemists globally.
