UAE's 500 Dirham Note Wins Best New Banknote Issue For Innovative Design
The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has been honoured with the Best New Banknote Issue for 2025 in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. This accolade was announced at the "High Security Printing EMEA" conference in Basel, Switzerland, in early February 2025. The award recognises the innovative design of the 500 Dirham note, which reflects the UAE's commitment to sustainability.
Featuring advanced security features and three-dimensional designs, this banknote is part of CBUAE's third polymer series. It incorporates cutting-edge technologies previously used in the award-winning AED 1000 banknote from 2023. This makes the UAE a pioneer in the Middle East for issuing notes with the largest surface-applied foil stripe in the region.

The new banknotes are printed on polymer material by Oumolat Security Printing, a subsidiary of CBUAE. This choice aligns with the UAE's vision to transition to a green economy. Polymer notes are more durable and fully recyclable, reducing their environmental impact significantly compared to traditional paper notes.
The front side of the 500 Dirham note showcases the Terra Sustainability Pavilion at Expo City Dubai. This architectural marvel symbolises the UAE's dedication to sustainable development, inspired by principles established by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
On its reverse side, the note features Dubai's Museum of the Future, an engineering wonder that connects past innovations with future possibilities. Additionally, iconic landmarks such as Emirates Towers and Burj Khalifa are depicted. The Burj Khalifa stands as a beacon of sustainability, powered largely by solar energy.
Inclusion is also a priority for CBUAE. The banknote includes Braille symbols to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in recognising its value. This ensures accessibility for all users.
Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor - Banking Operations & Support Services at CBUAE and Chairman of Oumolat Security Printing Company’s Board of Directors, expressed pride in this achievement: "The Central Bank of the UAE's AED 500 banknote winning 'Banknote of the year' award is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation."
This recognition underscores CBUAE's leadership in introducing environmentally friendly banknotes with advanced security features. Their commitment extends beyond innovation; it includes ensuring that all users can access these notes easily through inclusive design elements like Braille symbols.
