RTA Reports 43% Surge In Commercial Vehicles And 33% Growth In Vehicle Rental Firms For 2024
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reported significant growth in the vehicle rental sector for 2024. This development supports Dubai's economic goals, particularly the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to position the city among the world's top three economic hubs. The number of newly registered commercial vehicles increased by about 43%, while registered vehicle rental companies grew by approximately 33% compared to 2023.
The RTA's Licensing Agency's Commercial Transport Activities Department revealed that 867 new rental companies were registered in 2024. This brought the total number of active companies to 3,494, up from 2,627 in 2023. The rental fleet expanded to 71,040 vehicles by the end of 2024, compared to 49,725 the previous year.

There was a notable rise in high-end vehicle rentals, which surged by 73%. Additionally, electric vehicles within the rental fleet saw a 50% increase compared to the previous year. This growth highlights Dubai's appeal as a business hub and its commitment to economic expansion.
Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency, stated: "The increase in the number of newly registered vehicles and companies operating in the commercial transport sector demonstrates Dubai’s competitiveness and appeal in attracting businesses to this sector. It also underscores the emirate’s commitment to accelerating economic growth and fulfilling its overarching development vision."
Mahboob emphasised RTA's dedication to service excellence through innovative solutions tailored to private sector needs. These efforts aim to enhance customer satisfaction and trust in Dubai’s business environment. By streamlining procedures and removing barriers, RTA supports private sector confidence in Dubai as a global commerce hub.
He added: "The growth in activity within the vehicle rental sector, both in terms of the number of vehicles and registered companies, further underscores RTA’s pioneering role in facilitating business operations in this domain." This progress is attributed to improved service quality and incentives alongside flexible regulatory frameworks governing all sector segments.
Key Initiatives Supporting Commercial Transport
The RTA has launched several initiatives bolstering support for commercial transport. One such initiative is the "Commercial Vehicle Life Extension Service," allowing applicants to extend their vehicle's operational lifespan by one year after passing technical inspections. This service enables registration renewal for vehicles exceeding permitted limits.
Another initiative is the "Hourly Commercial Vehicle Rental Service," which allows individuals and companies to rent commercial transport vehicles on an hourly basis. This promotes safer and more efficient service delivery. Additionally, introducing the "Commercial Licensing System (CLS)" has simplified application procedures for investors while enhancing governance and speeding up approvals.
The strategic initiatives undertaken by RTA have significantly contributed to strengthening Dubai's position as a leading global hub for commerce and finance. By fostering an environment conducive to business growth, these efforts align with Dubai's broader vision for economic development.
