34th Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge Set To Showcase Global Motorsport Talent In February 2025
A diverse group of drivers and riders is set to take on the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, part of the FIA and FIM World Rally-Raid Championship. This event, happening from 21st to 27th February 2025, will start in Al Ain. It marks the second round of the championship and promises intense competition among motorsport legends and emerging talents.
The 34th edition of this renowned event features 165 registered vehicles, including cars, bikes, and quads. Participants hail from 30 countries, showcasing a mix of seasoned icons and ambitious newcomers. The challenge is known for its demanding nature, making it a significant test for all involved.

Aref Al Awani, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, emphasised the event's importance. "The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is a major event in the UAE’s sporting calendar and a key fixture in global motorsport. The strong entry list highlights its significance, and this year’s edition promises to be one of the most competitive," he stated.
Khalid Bin Sulayem, President of the Emirates Motorsports Organisation (EMSO), highlighted the challenging route. "With a top-tier field confirmed, the UAE is set to host a thrilling second round of the FIA and FIM World Rally-Raid Championship. This year’s route is among the most demanding in the event’s history," he noted.
In the "Ultimate" category for cars, Nasser Al-Attiyah returns to defend his title with Dacia Sandrider. He faces tough competition from Sébastien Loeb, who also competes for Renault-owned Romanian team. Toyota Gazoo Racing enters as defending world champions after Yazeed Al Rajhi's Dakar victory.
The "Challenger" class sees fierce competition led by Nicolas Cavigliasso from Argentina, winner of Dakar 2025. In SSV class, Liwa Team UAE fields Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi and Mansour Al-Helei in Can-Am Maverick cars. Other notable Emirati competitors include Yahya Al Helei and Atif Al Zarouni.
In bikes category, Ross Branch leads Hero MotoSports after their first Rally-Raid victory at 2024 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. KTM Factory Racing poses strong competition with Daniel Sanders leading their team after winning Dakar 2025.
Local Talent Shines
Emirati rider Mohammed Balooshi enhances local representation alongside Marwan Alrahmani and Abdulla Lanjawi. Monster Energy Honda HRC returns aiming for top honours with Ricky Brabec and Adrian Van Beveren in their line-up.
Quads make their debut in this year's championship with Abdulaziz Ahli seeking his fifth consecutive title. The Empty Quarter offers an ideal setting for a rematch following last month's dramatic Dakar Rally where fog played a decisive role.
