1 Billion Followers Summit Reveals 10 Shortlisted Candidates For One Billion Award
The 1 Billion Followers Summit, organised by the New Media Academy, has revealed the ten finalists for the One Billion Award. This award offers a US$1 million prize, making it the most significant recognition for content creators globally. The shortlisted candidates produce content that aligns with the award's mission to positively impact societies and promote values like compassion and empathy.
Public voting for these candidates began on 22nd December and will continue until 28th December. The five candidates with the highest votes will move to the final selection phase. An expert panel will then choose the winner in closed sessions on 11th and 12th January 2025, with the announcement set for 13th January 2025.
Among the finalists is Dr. Adanna Steinacker from Nigeria, who left her medical career to focus on women's health education through social media. Nirmal Purja from the UK, originally from Nepal, is a mountaineer supporting Himalayan communities and environmental conservation through his foundation, Nimsdai.
Simon Squibb from the UK shares personal experiences to inspire future leaders and supports social enterprises tackling global issues. Charlie Rocket from the USA overcame personal challenges to help others achieve their dreams through his 'Dream Machine' Foundation. Samuel Weidenhofer from Australia spreads positivity through videos showcasing acts of kindness.
Ahmed AbuZaid from Egypt educates his audience on practical skills via his YouTube channel "Droos Online." Nasser Al-Oqail from Saudi Arabia simplifies complex books into actionable insights on his channel "Dupamicaffeine Sciences." Osratouna TV, founded by Abderrazak Bennadji, promotes Arabic language and culture among children.
Creators For Lebanon is a group of four Lebanese creators aiding displaced families and rebuilding communities. Mahmoud Zuaiter from Palestine creates uplifting content amid Gaza’s hardships to inspire hope and highlight social issues.
The judging panel includes Ahmed ElGhandour, an Egyptian content creator known for his show El Daheeh; Prajakta Koli, an influential Indian creator; Zachery Dereniowski from Canada, known for humanitarian content; Amine Imnir, who won Arab Hope Maker 2024; and Hassan Suleiman (AboFlah), famous for gaming content and charity campaigns.
The One Billion Award received over 16,000 submissions from creators in 160 countries within three weeks. The summit emphasises His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision of supporting creatives worldwide and establishing UAE as a digital content hub.
