Hamdan Bin Mohammed Inaugurates Landmark Dubai Reef Sustainability Initiative With Launch Of Pilot Modules
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, recently inaugurated the Dubai Reef project, a significant sustainable initiative under the banner of Dubai Can. This project is set to become the world's largest marine reef development endeavor, aiming to enhance ecological sustainability across Dubai's waters. The initiative plans to deploy 20,000 purpose-built reef modules over four years, covering an expansive area of 600 square kilometres and creating a volume exceeding 400,000 cubic metres.
The Dubai Reef project aligns with the strategic goals of Dubai and the UAE, including the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), the UAE's Green Agenda – 2030, and the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy. Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the project's role in bolstering marine life protection and contributing to global conservation efforts. The initiative is expected to have significant environmental and socio-economic benefits, supporting Dubai's commitment to a sustainable future.
The pilot phase of the Dubai Reef project saw its first modules activated, following a successful proof of concept in 2021 led by Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani and contractors HaejooX. The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and the newly established Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA) are key partners in this initiative. His Excellency Bin Thani, Director General of DECCA, will play a crucial role in the project's success, emphasizing environmental protection and climate action.
Strategic partners such as DP World, Dubai Chambers, Nakheel, the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, and Emirates are collaborating with DET to drive this project forward. Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, underscored the collaboration between public and private sectors in achieving the D33 Agenda's ambitious goals.
Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani elaborated on the project's objectives to create diverse environments for marine life stimulation. A two-year proof of concept conducted in partnership with HaejooX utilized advanced technologies to assess reef effectiveness in attracting fish species. Preliminary data indicated a significant increase in marine biodiversity.
The Dubai Reef initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on marine life protection and environmental sustainability. It aims to enhance biodiversity, safeguard coastal and marine habitats, support fish populations, increase ecosystem resilience, encourage environmental stewardship, boost socio-economic prosperity and ecotourism, and preserve Dubai’s marine heritage.
Renowned investor Ray Dalio expressed his admiration for the ambitious Dubai Reef project. He praised it as a significant contribution to ocean restoration understanding and highlighted its potential to improve Dubai's environment while offering an exceptional recreational park. Dalio commended the visionary leadership behind this ambitious undertaking.
The launch of the Dubai Reef project marks a pioneering step towards ecological sustainability in Dubai. With its comprehensive approach to enhancing marine biodiversity and protecting natural habitats, this initiative stands as a testament to Dubai's commitment to fostering a sustainable future for all.
