Wednesday Season 2: The Behind-The-Scenes Move That's Setting New Streaming Records
The second season of Wednesday is already setting new records due to a significant filming change. Production for the upcoming episodes has begun, with Jenna Ortega reprising her role as the main character from the Addams Family. This follows her unexpected exit from another Netflix project.
Most of the original cast members are returning, except one key actor who addressed his absence from the new season This announcement came after the series faced a hurdle when one of its stars left before finishing their scenes.
Filming Location Shift
A notable change this season is the filming location. While the first season was filmed in Romania, production has now moved to County Wicklow, Ireland. This shift has been confirmed by Screen Ireland, which stated that Wednesday will be "the largest production to ever film in Ireland" based on expenditure.
Logistical issues are believed to have prompted this relocation. To commemorate this milestone, Ireland's prime minister, Taoiseach Simon Harris, visited the set. He met with the show's creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and series director Tim Burton, who is also working on his Beetlejuice sequel set for release later this year.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Harris expressed his excitement about Ireland being chosen as a filming location for major series and movies. He said: "I'm delighted to see Ireland continues to be chosen as a location to film series and movies which supports our economy, creates jobs, showcase our creative talents and promotes our country on a global stage."
Anna Mallett, Netflix's BP Production EMEA, praised Wednesday as a "cultural juggernaut." She added: "In recent years we have invested substantially in productions made in Ireland, such as The Siege of Jadotville, The Wonder, Bodkin and Vikings: Valhalla."
Record-Breaking Success
After just one week of release, Wednesday was streamed for 341.2 million hours. This achievement broke a record previously held by Stranger Things. The Independent noted that despite Ortega's strong performance in the lead role, "it can't escape certain trappings, namely the fact that it's essentially Gen-Z Addams Family by way of Riverdale."
This season's changes and successes highlight both logistical challenges and cultural impacts while showcasing Ireland's growing role in global film production.
