Egyptian Thriller 'The Settlement' Premieres At Berlinale 2025, Wins Hearts
The 75th Berlin International Film Festival, running from February 13-25, showcased the world premiere of The Settlement, an Egyptian thriller that blends workplace dynamics with family drama, directed by Mohamed Rashad.
The film, inspired by real-life events, delves into the lives of two brothers living in a disadvantaged community in Alexandria. The story begins after the sudden death of their father in a workplace accident, leading them to accept job offers from the local factory as compensation. This decision sets them on a path of discovery, questioning the true nature of their father's death.

The premiere at Berlinale marks a significant moment for director Mohamed Rashad and for Egyptian cinema, bringing to light critical workplace and family issues through a compelling narrative and authentic storytelling.
The film's premiere was attended by a host of dignitaries and film industry professionals, including Hussein Fahmy, a seasoned actor and President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Mohamed El Badri, Egypt's Ambassador to Germany, Minister Plenipotentiary Youmna Osman, and numerous global filmmakers. Following the screening, Rashad engaged with the audience, sharing insights into the film's production challenges over five years, his decision to cast new actors, and the authenticity of filming on location.
Critics internationally have lauded The Settlement for its poignant narrative and Rashad's distinctive directorial approach. Massimiliano Schiavoni of Quinlan praised the film as "an excellent film, capable of portraying its setting and its struggles in a way that feels more human than material," particularly appreciating its focus on work-life, a theme he noted has been missing from Western cinema for decades. Verdiana Paolucci from Cinematografe commended Rashad for his ability to infuse the film with his personal experiences, making it "something unique and original."
The film, which features a cast of rising stars including Adham Shukr and Ziad Islam, was shot by cinematographer Mahmoud Lotfi and edited by Heba Othman, known for her work on the acclaimed Sudanese film Goodbye Julia. A collaborative effort across Egypt, France, Germany, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, The Settlement is produced by Hassala Films with co-production from international partners, showing the global interest and support for Rashad's project.
The Settlement is scheduled for four more screenings during the festival, offering audiences further opportunities to experience its compelling story. The narrative, rooted in the director's personal connection to Alexandria and inspired by a true account shared by a law school graduate, aims to highlight safety concerns and unethical practices within factories.
The film's development was backed by several prestigious international funding organizations, underlining its significance and the anticipation surrounding its release.
