Sony Music Acquires Majority Of Queen's Catalogue For £1 Billion
Sony Music has announced a significant acquisition, securing the majority of Queen's music catalogue and other rights for £1 billion (around $1.27 billion), as reported by Variety. This deal excludes revenue from live performances, which founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor will retain. They continue to tour with singer Adam Lambert. Queen's music catalogue is highly valued in the rock genre, featuring timeless hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "Radio Ga Ga." Other fan favourites include "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."
Distribution Rights and Challenges
Despite this acquisition, Sony will face some challenges. Disney holds the recorded-music rights for the US and Canada, acquired in the 2000s after an initial $10 million licensing deal in 1991. These rights will remain with Disney indefinitely. Additionally, Queen's current distribution deal with Universal will transfer to Sony in all territories outside the US and Canada when it expires in 2026 or 2027.
Queen's journey began when Brian May and Roger Taylor formed a new group after playing together in Smile. Freddie Mercury joined on vocals and piano, followed by John Deacon on bass. Each member contributed to their success with No. 1 singles over the next decade, including Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and May's "We Will Rock You." The band's influence remains strong as their songs continue to dominate charts and receive extensive airplay on radio and at sporting events. Queen's music catalogue is a treasure trove for rock music lovers.
