Saudi Film 'Noura' Makes Historic Debut At 77th Cannes Film Festival

In a significant stride for Saudi cinema, the Red Sea Film Foundation's Red Sea Fund showcased the Saudi film "Noura" at the prestigious 77th annual Cannes Film Festival. This screening marks historic moment as "Noura becomes the first Saudi film to be officially listed at the world’s most esteemed film gathering, under the Un Certain Regard section, which translates to "a certain look."

Fully shot in the historically rich city of AlUla in northwest Saudi Arabia, "Noura" enjoyed the backing of the Red Sea Fund. The movie's production team featured a remarkable 40% participation from Saudi nationals, underscoring the burgeoning support for the film industry within the Kingdom. With its international distribution deal already in place, "Noura" is set to hit Saudi and global cinemas on June 20, 2024.

The film is a poignant drama centered around characters Nader, played by Yaqoub Alfarhan, and Norah, portrayed by Maria Bahrawi. Set in a remote village in Saudi Arabia during the 90s, the story unfolds with Norah living a secluded life away from the village. The narrative takes a turn when she discovers unsettling truths about Nader, the village's new teacher, compelling her to confront her isolated existence for her desires.

AlUla, the filming location, is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right within "Noura". The city, renowned for its natural splendor and historical significance, began welcoming international production crews in 2020. Since then, it has been a vibrant hub for various local, regional, and international film projects. The decision to film "Noura" in AlUla not only showcases the city's picturesque landscapes but also aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader ambitions to position itself as a global player in the arts and culture sector.

The inclusion of "Noura" in the Cannes Film Festival's official selection is a testament to the evolving dynamics of Saudi cinema. This film's journey from AlUla to Cannes highlights the progressive support and burgeoning talent within the Kingdom's film industry. As "Noura" prepares for its international debut, it stands as a beacon of Saudi Arabia's cultural emergence on the global stage.
