Netflix To Release Peaky Blinders Movie Starring Cillian Murphy
The highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie is officially in the pipeline for Netflix, with Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Thomas Shelby. Netflix took to social media to unveil an image of the movie script, highlighting the involvement of key creatives such as Steven Knight, the brain behind Peaky Blinders and Eastern Promises, and director Tom Harper, known for his work on Peaky Blinders and Wild Rose.
Murphy expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me. … It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans."
Production is slated to start later this year, with Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley among the producers. Executive producers for the film include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason. While specific plot details remain confidential, Knight revealed to Deadline in 2022 that the storyline would unfold during World War II, promising an "explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story."
"It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. I'm genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen," Knight remarked, emphasizing the no-holds-barred, full-on Peaky Blinders wartime narrative.
Harper reflected on the journey since directing Peaky Blinders a decade ago: "When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn't know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it's incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix."
Murphy, who has played a pivotal role in the TV series from its inception in 2013 to its conclusion in 2022, has also been involved in other significant projects. Notably, his role in last year's Oppenheimer earned him an Oscar win for Actor in a Leading Role. He is also preparing for his dual role as actor and executive producer in the upcoming 28 Years Later, a sequel to the renowned post-apocalyptic franchise.
Following the end of the original Peaky Blinders series, there are reports of the universe expanding through two spinoffs, one set in 20th-century Boston and another centred on the character Polly Gray. As the Peaky Blinders movie gears up for its Netflix debut, the anticipation builds for this next, intense chapter in the saga of the Shelby family.
