This Prominent Arab Filmmaker Will Serve As Jury Member At Cannes Film Festival 2024

Nadine Labaki, the trailblazing Lebanese filmmaker and Oscar nominee, has been chosen to serve as a jury member at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival. This appointment comes six years after Labaki made history as the first Arab woman to win a major prize at Cannes. She will be in esteemed company, with a jury composed of internationally acclaimed talents.

The jury this year includes a diverse group of industry luminaries such as directors Kore-eda Hirokazu, known for "Shoplifters," and Juan Antonio Bayona, the mind behind "Society of the Snow." They will be joined by "Killers of the Flower Moon" actress Lily Gladstone and "Casino Royale" star Eva Green. The panel also features Turkish screenwriter Ebru Ceylan of "Winter Sleep," Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino from "Nostalgia," and French "Lupin" actor Omar Sy. Leading the jury for this year's festival is none other than "Barbie" filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

The jury faces the challenge of evaluating 22 films in the main competition, with the festival kicking off on May 14. The lineup includes a variety of anticipated works such as "The Shrouds" by David Cronenberg, "Megalopolis" by Francis Ford Coppola, and "Kinds of Kindness" by Yorgos Lanthimos, alongside other notable entries.

Their deliberations will culminate in the selection of winners across several categories, with the highlight being the awarding of the Palme d'Or for the best film on the festival's closing day, May 25.

Nadine Labaki's Illustrious Career

Labaki has been a significant figure in Middle Eastern cinema for years, celebrated for her work on films like "Caramel" and "Where Do We Go Now?" She gained widespread acclaim in 2018 with her Jury Prize win at Cannes for "Capernaum." The following year, she achieved another milestone by becoming the first Lebanese female filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

In addition to her directorial prowess, Labaki has showcased her acting skills in films such as the Netflix hit "Perfect Strangers" and "Costa Brava, Lebanon." Her participation as a jury member at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival further solidifies her status as a leading figure in the global film industry.

Labaki's return to Cannes as a jury member not only marks a significant moment in her career but also highlights the festival's recognition of her talents and contributions to cinema. As the film world convenes in May for the 77th Cannes Film Festival, all eyes will be on Labaki and her fellow jury members as they celebrate the best of global filmmaking.
