Donald Trump Biopic Among Highlights At Cannes Film Festival Premieres

As the Cannes Film Festival reached its midpoint, audiences were treated to a mix of anticipated premieres, including a Donald Trump biopic and a new horror flick by David Cronenberg. Among the standout performances, Demi Moore garnered attention for her role in The Substance, a horror film critiquing societal pressures on women to maintain bodily perfection. Moore's performance was hailed as "fearless" by Variety, putting her in contention for the best actress award.

The festival, a pinnacle event for the film industry, will wrap up its proceedings on Saturday, with awards selected by a jury led by Barbie director Greta Gerwig. Monday saw the premiere of The Apprentice, directed by Ali Abbasi, a film exploring Donald Trump's early years, featuring Sebastian Stan in the leading role. Stan, celebrated for his role in Marvel films and his portrayal of Tommy Lee in Pam and Tommy, brings a notable performance to Abbasi's film.

David Cronenberg returned to Cannes with The Shrouds, a film delving into themes of grief and technology. The narrative follows a widower, played by Vincent Cassell, who creates a machine to communicate with the dead. Cronenberg, inspired by the loss of his wife, shared with Variety his view on art and grief, highlighting the personal connection to the film's theme.

The festival also showcased Bird, by Andrea Arnold, and Kinds of Kindness, a dark comedy from Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos. Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis sparked debate among critics, while Emilia Perez emerged as a strong contender for accolades, with performances by Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofia Gascon drawing praise.

Outside the competition, the festival premiered two high-profile Hollywood films. Furiosa: a Mad Max Saga received positive reviews, while Kevin Costner’s Western, Horizon: An American Saga, received mixed feedback. Costner, who invested his own money into the project, expressed indifference to financial risks, emphasizing his artistic integrity and vision for the saga, whose subsequent chapters are eagerly anticipated.

The diverse lineup at Cannes this year underscores the film industry's broad range of storytelling and thematic exploration, from personal grief and societal pressures to epic narratives spanning decades. As the festival concludes, the jury faces the challenging task of selecting winners from a field of strong contenders, each bringing unique perspectives and cinematic excellence to the forefront.
