Qumra 2025 Masters Announced by Doha Film Institute

This year's lineup of Qumra Masters includes Lav Diaz, Darius Khunji, Walter Salles, Anna Terrazas, and Johnny To. Each brings a wealth of experience and distinct perspectives from their illustrious careers, offering invaluable insights to aspiring filmmakers. Their diverse backgrounds and contributions to cinema make them ideal mentors for participants looking to make their mark in the film industry.

Lav Diaz, renowned for his profound exploration of the human condition through cinema, stands out as a significant voice in Filipino filmmaking. His unique storytelling, often presented in black-and-white and dubbed 'slow cinema,' delves into themes of grief, survival, and resistance. Diaz's films, such as "The Evolution of the Filipino Family" and "The Woman Who Left," have not only won international acclaim but also inspired a new wave of Filipino cinema.

Darius Khunji, celebrated for his visual storytelling, has left a lasting impact on contemporary cinema. Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of the Doha Film Institute, expressed pride in welcoming these esteemed creatives as Qumra Masters. Elia Suleiman, Artistic Advisor to the Doha Film Institute, highlighted the importance of Qumra as a place where the future of cinema is discovered, not dictated. "Cinema is not only about the stories we tell, but also about the silences that surround them, the spaces where meanings unfold," Suleiman noted, emphasizing the event's role in fostering emerging voices.
