CBS Secures Entertainment Slate With 5-Year Golden Globes And American Music Awards Rights
The entertainment landscape is set for a significant boost as CBS secures the broadcast rights for the Golden Globes, bringing the awards show to television screens and digital platforms for another five years. This new agreement, beginning with the January 2025 telecast, not only reaffirms the Golden Globes' prominence in the awards season calendar but also introduces the American Music Awards to the network, marking a fresh chapter for these celebrated events.
The partnership renewal comes after the Golden Globes' successful broadcast in January 2024, the first ceremony following its acquisition by Dick Clark Productions—a venture jointly owned by Variety's parent company PMC and Eldridge. This move was particularly noteworthy given the show's tumultuous recent history, including a hiatus following controversies surrounding its former producer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Despite these challenges, the Golden Globes have experienced a remarkable resurgence, with the 2024 ceremony attracting 9.4 million viewers, a significant 50% increase from the previous year's viewership on NBC. This figure rose to 10 million with delayed viewing, underscoring the event's enduring appeal and the successful collaboration between CBS and the new producers.
George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS, expressed enthusiasm for the continued partnership, highlighting the network's commitment to this unique live event. "CBS' collaboration with the Globes for this year's broadcast was a big win for both of us and established strong momentum for awards shows in 2024," Cheeks said. He emphasized the value the Globes add to CBS's annual calendar, noting the excitement for future broadcasts.
Jay Penske, chairman and CEO of Penske Media and Dick Clark Productions, also commented on the extended partnership, acknowledging CBS's support during a challenging period for the Globes. Penske praised the network's foresight and commitment to cultural live events, expressing pride in continuing this relationship.
Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes, underscored the significance of this milestone, celebrating the audience growth in 2024 and expressing optimism for the future. "Today marks a significant milestone for the Globes as we solidify our partnership with CBS and Paramount+ for the next five years," Hoehne stated. She looks forward to leveraging this success to make the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards the most memorable yet.
