'Social Network 2' In Works? Aaron Sorkin Delves Into Specifics

Aaron Sorkin, the acclaimed screenwriter behind the Oscar-winning film "The Social Network", has recently disclosed his ongoing work on a sequel script. The Hollywood Reporter shared insights from Sorkin's appearance on The Town podcast, where he discussed the significant influence of Facebook and social media on democratic processes since the original movie's debut.

The first film offered a detailed account of the early stages of Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, showcasing performances by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake. Sorkin's sequel is set to navigate the complex landscape of Facebook's involvement during the Trump presidency, particularly focusing on the January 6 riots. This event, marked by violence and chaos, resulted in numerous casualties and left more than 140 police officers injured.

While Sorkin remained vague about the sequel's specifics, he indicated that the script would delve into Facebook's role in these events, directly stating, "I blame Facebook for January 6." However, he stopped short of elaborating, suggesting that audiences would need to see the film to understand his perspective fully.

The scrutiny of Facebook intensified following January 6, with investigations highlighting the company's handling of the "Stop the Steal" movement and its failure to mitigate the spread of extremist groups' content. Frances Haugen, a whistleblower, further accused Facebook of disbanding its civic integrity team post-2020 election and of amplifying harmful content for profit.

Despite the anticipation for "The Social Network 2", Sorkin revealed that the project is in its early stages without a confirmed studio partnership. This script represents Sorkin's renewed effort to address the January 6 incident, following a previously unproduced script on the same topic. He also noted that his involvement in the sequel hinges on David Fincher's return as the director, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further developments.
