Spain's Yamal Urged To Adapt To Rough Play At Euro 2024 By Coach De La Fuente

Lamine Yamal must brace for tough treatment from opponents at Euro 2024, according to Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente. The 16-year-old has been a standout player for La Roja in Germany, assisting three goals as Spain have won all five of their matches in the tournament.

No Spanish player has ever recorded more assists in a single European Championship than Yamal. He has created 14 chances, the most for Spain at a major competition since Xavi's 25 at Euro 2012. Despite his impressive performance, Spain has faced frustration due to opposition tactics aimed at stopping Yamal and his wing partner Nico Williams.

Yamal's Rough Play Adaptation at Euro 2024

De la Fuente acknowledged that Yamal must adapt to the physicality of the game. "It's part of football, it's part of the game," De la Fuente said during Monday's pre-match press conference. "There are ways to gain an edge through playing or with intimidatory tactics. Each one uses their tools, always within a disciplinary regime imposed by the referee."

Spain team-mate Rodri has called for greater protection for Yamal from referees. "As football players, we always want to be protected," Rodri stated. "This is the job of the referee. I mean, he puts the standard, so what is a yellow card or red card is his job."

Yamal has only won four free-kicks at this tournament so far. De la Fuente believes that Yamal needs to understand this reality and continue developing his game. "You have to explain to a 16-year-old kid that he needs to see that reality," De la Fuente added. "Lamine has to continue being him and learn that this is how it is."

Upcoming Challenges

France's Adrien Rabiot has already acknowledged Yamal's threat and plans to put pressure on the Barcelona forward. Rodri anticipates a challenging match as Spain aims for a final against either the Netherlands or England, who play on Wednesday in Dortmund.

"Tomorrow is going to be a very, very physical battle because they are a very physical team," said Manchester City star Rodri. "So we will have to go in the same way, try to be strong, use the body, because we know the power they have."

Spain hopes their young star can continue his impressive form while adapting to the challenges posed by physical opponents. The team's success may hinge on how well Yamal handles these pressures and how effectively referees manage the game's physicality.

The anticipation builds as Spain prepares for their semi-final clash with France, with hopes high for another stellar performance from Yamal and his teammates.
