West Ham United Announces Julen Lopetegui As New Head Coach Following Moyes' Departure
West Ham United have confirmed the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach, following David Moyes' departure at the end of the season. Moyes' second stint at the London Stadium concluded with a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on the final day, leaving the Hammers in ninth place in the Premier League.
Despite achieving three top-half finishes in four seasons and winning the Europa Conference League last year, Moyes faced criticism from a section of the fanbase over his style of play throughout 2023-24. It was announced at the start of May that Moyes would not extend his contract.

Reports quickly suggested that Lopetegui was the leading candidate to succeed Moyes, and it has now been confirmed that he will officially begin his tenure on July 1. Lopetegui expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "I feel that we have a fantastic platform."
Lopetegui added, "My ambition as a coach is always to be better and achieve more. We are very ambitious about this. I am here because I want to be here, and our commitment is 100 per cent."
Lopetegui left his previous role with Wolves just before the 2023-24 season, frustrated by a lack of transfer activity after saving the team from relegation in 2022-23. His coaching career includes stints with Porto, Spain, Real Madrid, and Sevilla, where he led the team to Europa League success and three consecutive top-four finishes in LaLiga.
Fan Engagement
Speaking to West Ham's media channels, Lopetegui emphasised the importance of fan support: "I assure the fans that they are going to be key in all our achievements." He also mentioned that he had other opportunities but chose West Ham because of mutual interest.
Lopetegui's appointment marks a new chapter for West Ham United as they aim to build on their recent successes and strive for higher achievements under his leadership.
