Walker Defends Southgate's Tactics In Wake Of England-Denmark Stalemate

England's Kyle Walker swiftly defended Gareth Southgate and his tactics following the team's 1-1 draw with Denmark. The Three Lions initially took the lead in the 18th minute through Harry Kane after a nervous start in Frankfurt. However, similar to their match against Serbia, they failed to build on their advantage.

A common criticism of Southgate during his tenure has been the defensive approach his team adopts after scoring the opening goal, despite having a wealth of talent at his disposal. This time, England was punished when Morten Hjulmand scored from distance, beating Jordan Pickford.

Walker Backs Southgate After Draw

Walker addressed these criticisms in an interview with BBC Sport, stating that Southgate encourages free, attacking football. "The manager has expressed that he wants us to play free, attacking football," Walker said. He added that managing the game is crucial in tournament football, comparing it to the challenges of winning the Champions League.

"Sometimes, in tournament football, you have to manage the game; it is what it is. That's why it is so hard to win tournaments," Walker explained. He acknowledged the difficulties of playing in hostile environments but remained optimistic about England's performance.

Walker made his 85th appearance for England against Denmark and serves as vice-captain to Harry Kane. When asked about his message to the squad following the result, Walker emphasised that the team has another gear but noted that they haven't lost the game.

"They will know as individuals and as a team collective; we all know that we have another gear," Walker said. "Obviously, everyone wants us to come and steamroll teams three or four nil, but it's not football these days."

Looking Ahead

Despite the draw, Walker highlighted that England remains at the top of Group C. "We have got a point; we will move on. We are top of the group, and we just keep going like that," he concluded.

The match against Denmark showcased both strengths and areas for improvement for Southgate's squad as they continue their campaign in EURO 2024.
