Virgil van Dijk is contemplating his future at both club and international levels following the Netherlands' Euro 2024 disappointment against England. Ollie Watkins scored a last-minute goal, leading the Three Lions to a 2-1 comeback victory in Dortmund, eliminating Ronald Koeman's team.
The Netherlands have now faced elimination in seven World Cup or European Championship semi-finals. Only Germany has experienced more semi-final exits, with eight losses. This latest defeat adds to the Oranje's history of near misses on the big stage.
Van Dijk, who celebrated his 33rd birthday earlier this week, was questioned about his plans for continuing with the national team after the match. The centre-back, also linked to a potential departure from Liverpool as he enters the final year of his contract, remained non-committal about his future.
"I haven't the slightest idea right now," Van Dijk stated. "I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first we need to recover from this."
Reflecting on the season, Van Dijk mentioned that it had been emotionally taxing due to various events. "After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it's over," he added.
