Josh Sargent Recalled As Pulisic, Balogun Lead USA's Preliminary Copa America Squad

United States coach Gregg Berhalter has unveiled a 27-man preliminary squad ahead of the Copa America. Josh Sargent, the Norwich City forward, has been recalled to the USA squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Colombia. This marks Sargent's first appearance for his country since 2022.

With first-choice right-back Sergino Dest injured, Berhalter has turned to Nashville SC's Shaq Moore in defence. The squad also features established names such as Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Matt Turner, Weston McKennie, and Brendan Aaronson.

Former Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, who chose to represent the USA over England, has made the cut. Coventry City's Haji Wright, who has had a strong season in England's second tier, is also included. Berhalter explained that Sargent's call-up provides another option in attack, with Wright primarily seen as a wide option.

Giovanni Reyna, the 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker on loan at Nottingham Forest since January, is also included despite a feud between Berhalter and Reyna's family following the World Cup. Fulham's Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream have been called up after impressive seasons with their club.

Notable omissions include former Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen and MLS stars Jesus Ferreira and Jordan Morris. Berhalter commented on the squad selection, stating that this summer presents an opportunity for the team to progress and grow as they build towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Berhalter will trim down his squad after the friendlies. The USA will face Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia in Group C of the Copa America.
