USA Secures Olympic Quarter-Final Spot With Commanding Win Over Germany
The United States secured a spot in the Paris Olympic Games quarter-finals with a decisive 4-1 win over Germany on Sunday. Sophia Smith scored twice in the first half, flanking Mallory Swanson's goal, while Lynn Williams sealed the victory late on. Despite Giulia Gwinn's equaliser, the USA proved too strong and advanced to the knockout rounds.
Smith opened the scoring early by tapping in from close range past Ann-Katrin Berger. Gwinn equalised 11 minutes later with a precise shot into the bottom-left corner. However, Swanson quickly restored the lead by reacting fastest to Smith's saved shot, firing in from a tight angle on the left.

Just before halftime, Smith netted her second goal with a deflected effort that looped over Berger and bounced in off the far post. Jule Brand hit the woodwork after an hour, adding to Germany's woes. Captain Alexandra Popp was forced off late in the second half with a knee injury, further compounding their difficulties.
Williams made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, finishing a swift counter-attack just under four minutes later. This goal wrapped up a comprehensive performance by the USA, who now have six points from two matches.

Historic Achievements for Hayes and Swanson
This victory ensured Emma Hayes became only the second coach to win her first two major tournament matches with the USA, following Anson Dorrance's feat in the 1991 World Cup. Swanson added to her tally against Zambia by scoring again in Marseille, becoming just the second player in USA history to score three times in a single Olympics group stage after Abby Wambach in 2012.
Historically, each of the five previous major tournament meetings between the USA and Germany has seen the winner go on to claim the title. Hayes will be hoping this trend continues as they progress further into the competition.
The USA's dominant performance not only secured their place in the quarter-finals but also highlighted their attacking prowess and defensive resilience. As they move forward, maintaining this form will be crucial for their quest for Olympic glory.
