USA Coach Berhalter Confident In Leadership After Copa America Departure
The United States' early exit from the Copa America has not shaken Gregg Berhalter's confidence in his role as head coach. Despite a disappointing 1-0 loss to Uruguay, which, combined with Panama's 3-1 victory over Bolivia, ended their campaign, Berhalter remains optimistic about his future with the team.
When questioned about his suitability for leading the team into the 2026 World Cup, Berhalter affirmed his commitment. "Yes. You have to keep moving forward. It's not where you say okay, this program is doomed. That's not the case at all," he stated. He acknowledged the team's underperformance and stressed the need for improvement.

Uruguay's Mathas Olivera scored midway through the second half, securing their win and setting them up to face either Brazil or Colombia in the quarter-finals. The USA managed only eight shots, with three on target, and an expected goals (xG) of 0.56 compared to Uruguay's 1.4.
Uruguay entered the tournament as strong contenders alongside Argentina and Brazil. They lived up to expectations by winning all three group matches, marking their first such achievement since 1959. This year's performance also saw them collect all available points in the group stage for the first time since 1942.
Assistant coach Diego Reyes commented on their upcoming challenges: "They are two great opponents. Colombia is living a very good moment presently. Brazil, we all know they are great." He added that analysing their next opponent would be crucial for preparation.
Reflecting on their match against the USA, Reyes noted that finding their rhythm was beneficial: "I believe that after some minutes (against the USA), the team was able to find its way." He emphasised that this experience would help in future matches.
Disappointment and Reflection
Berhalter expressed his disappointment with the results: "We're bitterly disappointed in the results," he said. "We know that we're capable of more and at this tournament we didn't show it." This sentiment highlights a need for introspection and growth within the team.
The USMNT's failure to advance after winning their opening group stage match is unprecedented. According to OptaJack, this marks the first time they did not progress after winning their initial game in a tournament.

This early exit serves as a wake-up call for Berhalter and his squad as they prepare for future competitions. The focus now shifts to addressing weaknesses and building a stronger team for upcoming challenges.
The journey ahead will require resilience and strategic adjustments if they aim to perform better in future tournaments like the World Cup in 2026.
