Uruguay's Penalty Shootout Win Against Brazil Marks Their Copa America Semi-final Entry

Uruguay demonstrated their resilience and national team spirit in a penalty shootout win over Brazil, according to Marcelo Bielsa. The 15-time Copa America champions advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-2 shootout victory after a goalless draw in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Uruguay, who have swiftly adapted to Bielsa's aggressive attacking style, had to play the last 20 minutes with ten men after Nahitan Nandez was sent off for a tackle on Rodrygo. This forced them to switch from their usual offensive tactics to a more defensive approach. From Nandez's red card onwards, Uruguay restricted Brazil to just two attempts.

Uruguay Beats Brazil in Penalties

Bielsa expressed satisfaction with his team's defensive performance. "I am a bit more drawn to the offensive than the defensive game, but in a match that was as tight as this one, we created one more opportunity than our opponent and we defended well," he said. "I do think that defensively, not because I achieved it but because the players are inherently good at defending, that they are very good at keeping a clean sheet."

Uruguay have now kept three consecutive clean sheets and limited Brazil to just 0.58 expected goals (xG). Their defensive solidity has been a key factor in their recent success.

Bielsa highlighted the team's character during the penalty shootout. "They were very calm in the penalty shootout that demands not only accuracy but also character," he noted. This composure under pressure was crucial in securing their place in the semi-finals.

"Everything that happens, happens Uruguayan style, because the players are the ones that give their all to the team," Bielsa added. "It was a match with very little goal opportunities, highly contested, very close, even with very little changes in possession."

Historical Achievement

This marks the first time Uruguay have reached the semi-finals of the Copa America since their last triumph in 2011. La Celeste had previously endured three consecutive quarter-final exits, with two of those being decided by penalties (2019 and 2021).

Uruguay will now face an in-form Colombia side, who recently defeated Paraguay 5-0, in the semi-finals. This upcoming match promises to be another challenging test for Bielsa's team.

"When we were one man down, we decided to dedicate ourselves to defending in our half," Bielsa explained. "So holding on to that result as the Uruguayan team did shows the profile of Uruguayan football."

Their ability to adapt and perform under pressure has been a defining feature of Uruguay's campaign so far. As they prepare for their next challenge against Colombia, they will look to continue showcasing their resilience and tactical flexibility.

The journey through this tournament has highlighted Uruguay's strengths both offensively and defensively. With Bielsa at the helm, they have shown they can compete at the highest level while maintaining their unique style of play.

Their progress into the semi-finals is not just a testament to their skill but also their determination and unity as a team. As they face Colombia next, Uruguay will aim to build on this momentum and strive for another Copa America title.
