UEFA Admits Super League-Style Plans Could Harm Domestic Leagues

In a candid admission, UEFA has acknowledged that its previous considerations for a Super League-style competition would have detrimentally affected the excitement and competitiveness of domestic football leagues. Back in 2019, the governing body of European football entertained the idea of a revamped club competition structure, which included elements of promotion and relegation based on continental performance. This concept shared similarities with the recent proposal by A22 for a 64-team European Super League, which would allocate only 20 spots through domestic league performance into its lowest division.

Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA's deputy general secretary, expressed that the criticism directed at both their 2019 proposal and the Super League's concept is warranted. He highlighted the potential consequences of such a format on domestic competitions, where clubs assured of their place in Europe might lack motivation to compete vigorously in their local leagues. This scenario, he argued, would not only undermine the sporting integrity of these leagues but also diminish their commercial appeal due to less engaging matches and lower stakes.

UEFA's Plans Threaten Domestic Football

Marchetti further explained that the drive to qualify for European competitions, particularly the Champions League, plays a crucial role in maintaining the competitive spirit and financial health of domestic leagues. Recognizing the adverse impact their 2019 proposal could have had on these aspects, UEFA ultimately decided against implementing such changes.

In response to these considerations, UEFA has introduced a new format for its club competitions, set to commence next season. The Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League will each feature 36 teams competing in a single league phase. This adjustment aims to preserve the competitive balance and excitement within domestic leagues while offering an inclusive and engaging European competition structure.

The evolution of UEFA's stance reflects a broader understanding of the intricate balance between maintaining domestic league interest and innovating European club competitions. By opting for a more traditional format that upholds the principles of competition and meritocracy, UEFA seeks to ensure the long-term health and appeal of football across Europe.
