UEFA Mulls Over Increasing Euro 2024 Squad Sizes After Coaches' Request

UEFA is set to deliberate on the potential expansion of squad sizes for Euro 2024 in an upcoming meeting, responding to calls from several national team coaches, including England's Gareth Southgate. The discussion, aimed at possibly increasing the squad limit from 23 to 26 players, will take place during a workshop with the participating teams on April 8. This consideration comes as a response to the challenges posed by injuries within teams, a situation Southgate is currently navigating.

The governing body of European football, UEFA, announced its intention to evaluate the coaches' requests after noting their concerns. The final decision will be made after a comprehensive assessment of the ideas presented during the workshop. This move could mark a significant shift from the traditional 23-man squad requirement, reinstated for the first time since the 2018 World Cup. The expansion to 26 players was previously adopted following the coronavirus pandemic to accommodate unforeseen challenges.

Euro 2024 Squad Size Review

Southgate, who has faced the task of selecting squads under both formats, expressed his openness to accepting a 26-player squad if UEFA decides in favor. Despite his preference for the skill involved in choosing a smaller squad, he acknowledged the benefits of having additional players available, especially in light of current injury concerns within his team. The England manager highlighted the importance of making informed medical decisions and the flexibility that an expanded squad could provide in managing player fitness.

The potential for an expanded selection was previously utilized by Southgate during Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, allowing him to include players like Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson, Kyle Walker, and Kalvin Phillips despite their fitness concerns. The upcoming decision could similarly benefit players currently facing injuries, ensuring teams are better equipped to handle the rigours of a major tournament.

The UEFA meeting and workshop are scheduled for April 8 and 9 in Dusseldorf, where the future of squad sizes for Euro 2024 will be a key topic of discussion. As teams prepare for one of football's most prestigious tournaments, the outcome of this meeting could significantly impact their strategies and selections.
