Turkiye Targets Strong Run In 2026 World Cup After Proud Euro 2024 Exit

Turkiye aims for a strong performance at the 2026 World Cup after their commendable journey in Euro 2024, according to midfielders Salih Ozcan and Hakan Calhanoglu. Despite leading against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, Turkiye was defeated after two quick goals from their opponents.

In the match against the Netherlands, Samet Akaydin's header initially put Turkiye ahead. However, Stefan de Vrij's header and a Mert Muldur own goal within six minutes turned the game around. Turkiye had more shots (15 to 11) and higher expected goals (1.29 to 0.97 xG) but couldn't equalise.

Turkiye Eyes 2026 World Cup

Reflecting on their Euro 2024 experience, Ozcan expressed gratitude towards his team and fans. "We are very sad. I want to thank the team, everyone did their best. It's hard to find words right now," he said. He also highlighted their focus on the upcoming World Cup in 2026.

Ozcan emphasised the importance of fan support throughout the tournament. "We are all emotional, we want to thank our fans, the amazing support we got. They carried us from match to match, their support was very important for us," he added.

Captain Calhanoglu led Turkiye in passes attempted (52) and completed (48), as well as recoveries (seven) during Saturday's game. He acknowledged their efforts despite falling short of their goals.

Calhanoglu's Reflections

"Unfortunately, we could only make it this far. I am happy if we could bring excitement to our nation," Calhanoglu stated. He recognised that losing is part of football but remained proud of their achievements.

Calhanoglu also thanked his teammates for representing Turkiye admirably. "Everyone represented their country in the best possible way. I would like to thank all my team-mates," he said.

Their journey in Euro 2024 has provided valuable lessons that they plan to carry forward into future tournaments, particularly aiming for success at the World Cup in two years.
