Turkiye Advances To Euro 2024 Knockout Stage Following Czechia Victory
Baris Alper Yilmaz expressed satisfaction as Turkiye fulfilled their promise by reaching the Euro 2024 knockout stages after a 2-1 victory over Czechia. Vincenzo Montella's team secured second place in Group F with Cenk Tosun's late goal, setting up a match against Austria in Leipzig next Tuesday.
For the first time since 2008, Turkiye advanced from the group stage of the European Championships, with Yilmaz playing a crucial role. "I want to be as useful to the team as possible," said substitute Yilmaz after receiving the man of the match award. "It was a really difficult match. We made it to the last 16, we are very happy."

Yilmaz highlighted their pre-tournament discussions, stating, "When we talked with our friends before the camp, our only goal was to get out of the group. We kept our promise and left the group. Now we will proceed step by step." This achievement marks a significant milestone for Turkiye in European football.
Czechia's winless streak at the Euros continued, failing to secure a single victory in this tournament for only the second time since Euro 2016. Antonin Barak's early red card hindered their efforts, although Tomas Soucek's equaliser briefly revived hopes of an unlikely comeback.
"It is a disappointment because we all wanted to advance," Soucek remarked. "We were set up for it. I thought that was enough... and it is a disappointment because we didn't make it." Soucek reflected on their performance and challenges faced during the match.
Soucek added, "I said before the match that I hope it will not happen (the sending-off). It is the third match.... But of course there are many situations that we should have handled as a team." Despite their efforts, Czechia struggled to overcome setbacks and missed opportunities.
Reflecting on Missed Opportunities
"It was difficult. We knew that to get goal would be complicated, we didn't want to give up a goal," Soucek continued. "We were happy to get the equaliser... Everyone did the maximum. The morale was huge." He acknowledged their determination but lamented their unfortunate end.
"Just a sad end. We had some bad luck in goals. There was bad luck with decisions. But that is football. Sometimes it works, sometimes not," Soucek concluded. His comments encapsulate Czechia's challenging journey and ultimate disappointment in Euro 2024.
Turkiye now looks forward to facing Austria in Leipzig next Tuesday, aiming to continue their successful run in Euro 2024.
