Tom Lockyer Calls Implantable Defibrillator His 'New Little Superpower' After Cardiac Arrest
Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer has recently shared insights into his recovery journey after a life-threatening incident on the football pitch. The 29-year-old midfielder experienced a cardiac arrest during a Premier League match against Bournemouth on December 16, which resulted in his heart stopping for two minutes and 40 seconds. Following this harrowing event, Lockyer has been equipped with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a device he now refers to as his "new little superpower."
The incident has cast uncertainty over Lockyer's future in professional football. Speaking to ITV's Good Morning Britain, he expressed that the decision on whether he can return to the sport is beyond his control. However, he maintains a positive outlook, highlighting the minimal impact of the defibrillator on his daily activities, including golf, which he humorously notes has not improved despite the device.

Lockyer's ICD is designed to monitor his heart rhythm continuously and provide life-saving intervention if any irregularities are detected. He described the technology involved in managing his condition, including a device resembling an iPad that syncs with his defibrillator nightly, ensuring its proper function and reporting any heart activity anomalies back to the hospital.
Despite the challenges posed by his recovery, Lockyer has found solace in engaging activities such as building Lego sets. He shared his current project of constructing a Disney castle, a complex 5,000-piece endeavor. With the anticipation of his first child, Lockyer joked about the ambitious goal of building the Titanic but questioned its feasibility with the new addition to his family on the horizon.
The Welsh footballer's experience sheds light on the importance of medical advancements in sports, offering athletes a lifeline in the face of potentially fatal health crises. Lockyer's story is not just one of survival but also of adaptation and resilience, demonstrating how technology can intersect with human spirit to overcome life's most daunting challenges.
