Switzerland's Strong Showing Against Germany Signals Team's Resilience, Says Xhaka
Granit Xhaka expressed pride in Switzerland's performance despite narrowly missing out on the top spot in Group D at Euro 2024. Dan Ndoye's first international goal had Switzerland on the brink of a memorable victory, but Niclas Fullkrug's 92nd-minute equaliser in Frankfurt ensured Germany topped the group.
Germany's late celebration highlighted the challenge Switzerland posed, with Xhaka noting that his team can take confidence from their display. "I think when you see the Germans celebrating, we can be proud of ourselves," Xhaka told reporters. "It's not always easy against a team like that. Nevertheless, the late equaliser hurts."

Xhaka emphasised the importance of teamwork and pushing their limits. "We said to ourselves that we have our own challenge. It started today. Of course, you have to compliment the opponent too. But above all, we have to be proud of ourselves. Everyone fought for each other and ran for each other," he added.
Veteran midfielder Toni Kroos praised Switzerland but maintained that Germany performed well overall. "It's clear that Switzerland are a good team," he said. "That's why I think we controlled it very well... In the second half, it got better. I think we improved in the second half. We played a little better there. But I'm totally satisfied with the team."
Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan was less enthusiastic in his assessment, acknowledging that his team missed an opportunity to secure three wins in as many group games. "Of course, we would have liked to win the game and to play great football," the Barcelona midfielder said. "But I think you also need games like that during a tournament. And that can also be a real strength for the next games, hopefully."
Germany will face the second-place team from Group D in the last 16, while Switzerland's second-place finish sets up a meeting with the runners-up of Group B.
The match saw Dan Ndoye scoring his first international goal, putting Switzerland ahead and setting them up for what seemed like a significant victory. However, Niclas Fullkrug's late equaliser changed the dynamics, ensuring Germany retained their top spot in Group D.
Xhaka's comments reflect a sense of pride and resilience within the Swiss camp, despite the disappointment of conceding late. The midfielder highlighted the importance of teamwork and pushing their limits to achieve success.
Kroos' remarks underscored Germany's control over the game, particularly in the second half, while Gundogan pointed out that such challenging matches could prove beneficial as the tournament progresses.
Looking Ahead
With both teams advancing to the knockout stages, Germany will prepare to face the second-place team from Group D, and Switzerland will meet the runners-up from Group B. The performances in this match suggest both teams are capable of making deep runs in Euro 2024.
