Penalty Shootout Ends Switzerland's Dream Run At Euro 2024

Xherdan Shaqiri expressed his disappointment after Switzerland's Euro 2024 journey ended in a penalty shootout loss to England in the quarter-finals. Shaqiri stated, "There is nothing more brutal than to go home after penalties." He highlighted the team's effort and the pride they brought to their fans.

Switzerland had previously knocked out reigning champions Italy in the round of 16. They were on track for a semi-final spot when Breel Embolo scored with 75 minutes played. However, Bukayo Saka equalised for England within five minutes, leading to a penalty shootout after another 40 goalless minutes.

Euro 2024: Swiss Heartbreak in Penalties

Gareth Southgate's team held their nerve during the shootout. Jordan Pickford saved Manuel Akanji's first penalty for Switzerland, while all other kicks were converted. This marked only the fourth time England won on penalties and their second victory against Switzerland in such a manner, following their Nations League win in 2019.

Shaqiri reflected on the team's performance, saying, "We fought and gave it all we had to try and qualify so the fairytale could continue. You saw the enthusiasm and how big it was, not only in Switzerland but also in Germany." He expressed pride in how the team played throughout the tournament.

Dan Ndoye, Shaqiri's teammate, also shared his thoughts on the defeat. He said, "This loss is tough to accept. I think we deserved to be in the semi-finals with this team, which was so united. We had the qualities to go further." Ndoye acknowledged that losing on penalties is painful but recognised it as part of football.

The Swiss team’s journey at Euro 2024 may have ended earlier than hoped, but their efforts left a lasting impact on their supporters. The players' determination and unity were evident throughout their matches, bringing joy and pride to many back home.

Despite falling short of reaching the semi-finals, Switzerland's performance at Euro 2024 showcased their potential and resilience. The experience gained from this tournament will undoubtedly contribute to their future endeavours on the international stage.
