Stan Bowles: QPR Football Icon Passes Away At 75 Following Alzheimer’s Battle

Former Queens Park Rangers (QPR) forward Stan Bowles has passed away at the age of 75 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease, as confirmed by the club. Bowles, celebrated for his remarkable career and contributions to football, began his journey as an apprentice at Manchester City before moving through the ranks of English football with stints at Crewe, Carlisle, and notably QPR.

During his tenure at QPR starting in 1972, Bowles made an indelible mark with 315 league appearances and 97 goals over seven seasons. His prowess on the field was instrumental in QPR's memorable runner-up finish to Liverpool in the old First Division during the 1975-76 season under manager Dave Sexton. The club, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over his passing, highlighting Bowles as a footballing icon and arguably the greatest player to have donned the famous blue and white hoops.

QPR announced the sad news of Bowles' passing on February 24, 2024, extending their condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. The club also indicated plans to pay a fitting tribute to Bowles, acknowledging his status not only as a QPR icon but also as one of England's top talents and a maverick in the sport.

Bowles' career trajectory took him to Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough in 1979 and later to Second Division Leyton Orient. Despite his undeniable talent, Bowles was capped only five times for England, scoring his sole international goal against Wales at Ninian Park in 1974.

After retiring from professional football in 1984 with Brentford, Bowles ventured into after-dinner speaking, punditry, and writing a betting column. His 1996 autobiography shed light on his life off the pitch, revealing his struggles with drinking, womanising, and gambling during his playing days.

Following his Alzheimer's diagnosis, Bowles returned to Manchester for care under his eldest daughter, Andria. In a show of support and recognition for his contributions to football and the community, QPR hosted a benefit match against Bournemouth in 2017 to raise funds for his care.

The football world mourns the loss of Stan Bowles, remembering him not just for his achievements on the field but also for his vibrant personality and the impact he had on fans and fellow players alike. As tributes pour in, Bowles' legacy as a true legend of the game is cemented forever in the hearts of those who admired him.
