SPFL Probes Into Postponed Dundee Vs Rangers Match Amid Concerns

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has announced it will conduct an investigation into the postponement of Dundee's home game against Rangers, which was scheduled to be broadcast live on Sky Sports. The decision to delay the match was made approximately 90 minutes before the intended kick-off time, sparking dissatisfaction from Rangers' manager Philippe Clement.

An initial inspection of the pitch was carried out at 9.15 am by local referee Craig Fordyce, with a follow-up assessment by match referee Don Robertson at 10.15 am. The game, initially set for a noon start, was ultimately called off due to a waterlogged pitch. This decision has led to an SPFL spokesperson expressing regret, especially considering the match's significance and its timing close to the season's split.

Philippe Clement voiced his frustration, pointing out that this was the sole match across all Scottish leagues to be postponed that day, suggesting that weather conditions alone could not justify the decision. He highlighted that matches in other lower leagues proceeded without issue despite similar rainfall across Scotland.

Referee Don Robertson cited player safety as the primary concern leading to the postponement. Upon inspection, he found the pitch's condition unplayable, with issues such as the ball not bouncing correctly and several areas posing risks to player safety.

The Rangers Football Club released a statement expressing their disappointment and frustration over the late decision to postpone the game. The club emphasized the inconvenience caused to their supporters and highlighted the critical timing of this match as they trail behind league leaders Celtic by one point, with a game in hand. A rescheduled date for the Dundee versus Rangers match is pending announcement.
