Spain Secures Historic Fourth Euro Title, Overcoming England In Final
Spain triumphed over England in the European Championship final on Sunday, with Mikal Oyarzabal scoring the decisive goal. The Three Lions had hoped for a comeback after Cole Palmer equalised Nico Williams' opener, but Oyarzabal's late strike secured Spain's 2-1 victory. This win marks Spain's fourth European Championship title, surpassing Germany for the most titles won.
Spain's triumph in Berlin was historic as they became the first European nation to win seven matches at a major international tournament. They scored 15 goals during Euro 2024, the highest tally by any nation in a single Euros tournament. This victory adds to their impressive record, making them the most successful team in European Championship history.

England made an unwanted piece of history with their defeat, becoming the first team to lose back-to-back European Championship finals. Gareth Southgate also became the first manager to oversee two final defeats in this competition. Despite a solid start, England fell behind just 69 seconds into the second half when Williams scored from Yamal's pass.
Nico Williams' goal was notable for being the earliest second-half strike in any Euros final. At 22 years and two days old, he became the second-youngest player to score in a Euros final, following Pietro Anastasi for Italy in 1968. Yamal set another record by becoming the first Spain player to register four assists in a single European Championship tournament.
England's equaliser came quickly after Palmer side-footed Jude Bellingham's lay-off into the bottom-left corner just 142 seconds after coming on. This was England's fastest goal by a substitute at the Euros and the second-fastest by any substitute in a Euros final. Bellingham's assist came during his 15th appearance at a major international tournament, making him the youngest player to reach this milestone.
Oyarzabal's Impact
Mikal Oyarzabal has now scored 12 goals for Spain, with nine of them coming as a substitute. His last five goals have all been scored off the bench. He joins Oliver Bierhoff (Germany), David Trezeguet (France), and Eder (Portugal) as substitutes who have scored winning goals in European Championship finals.
England have now conceded first in eight of their last 12 matches across all competitions and have done so consecutively in four matches for the first time since 1985. Despite Palmer’s quick response, England lost control again when Oyarzabal turned Marc Cucurella’s cross into a goal.
England's Continued Struggles
This defeat extends England’s long wait to add another major trophy since their 1966 World Cup win. They have now played 45 matches at the Euros without lifting the trophy, more than any other nation. Belgium is second on this list with 26 matches played without winning.
Spain’s consistent performance throughout Euro 2024 highlights their dominance in international football. Their ability to secure victories and break records sets them apart as one of Europe’s top teams.
The Three Lions will need to reassess their strategy as they look forward to future tournaments. The resilience shown by Spain serves as an example of what it takes to succeed at this level.
