Spain's Adaptability Under De La Fuente Hailed As Key To Euro 2024 Success
Spain's tactical adaptability under Luis de la Fuente has been pivotal to their standout performance at Euro 2024, according to Rodri. Despite initial concerns about their challenging group with Italy, Croatia, and Albania, Spain triumphed in all three matches and continued to shine. They defeated Georgia 4-1 in the last 16 and edged out hosts Germany 2-1 in extra time during the quarter-finals, setting up a semi-final clash with France on Tuesday.
Rodri emphasised that Spain's willingness to deviate from their traditional 'Tika-Taka' style against stronger opponents has been crucial. "You have to know what you're facing, what you can and can't do. That's what we have done best so far," he told The Guardian. He highlighted how Spain adapted their play against teams like Italy, Croatia, and Germany, who also prefer possession football.

The Opta supercomputer predicts an equal chance for France (30%) and Spain (30%) to win the trophy on Sunday, with England (23%) and the Netherlands (16%) trailing behind. Many observers believe Spain has showcased the best football at the tournament. They lead in expected goals (10.3 xG), shots (76), and shots on target (36) among all teams in Germany.
Despite their success, Spain ranks third for average possession share (57%), behind Portugal (66%) and Germany (62%). England also completes more passes than De la Fuente's squad. Rodri noted that understanding when to concede possession was vital against top-tier teams. "We've played a lot of teams that are good collectively... where we have had to understand and interpret," he said.
Rodri believes this approach will be essential against pre-tournament favourites France as well. "We have to approach this with the same mentality: play like a big team with the ball and a small team without it," he stated. He acknowledged France's physical strength and individual talent but stressed the importance of adapting their game plan accordingly.
Overcoming Challenges
Spain faced a surprising defeat to Scotland early in their qualification campaign. However, Rodri always trusted former under-21 coach De la Fuente to steer them back on track. "I always had a lot of confidence in this group... I knew the coach and I was convinced that with work and effort we would get it right," he said.
Rodri explained that while Spain shares similar philosophies with Manchester City, they adapt to De la Fuente's strategies by being more direct yet maintaining enough possession to challenge opponents effectively. "Here we try to be a bit more vertical... but with enough possession to do damage," he added.
Knocking out hosts Germany was one of the toughest challenges they faced. "In the end, we did it," Rodri remarked, highlighting the significance of their achievement.
Spain's journey through Euro 2024 showcases their ability to blend traditional strengths with tactical flexibility, making them formidable contenders for the title.
