Spain Triumphs Over France In Euro 2024 Semi-Final Clash
Didier Deschamps admitted that Spain outperformed France in their 2-1 semi-final loss at Euro 2024 in Munich. France took an early lead with Randal Kolo Muani's header in the eighth minute, but Lamine Yamal equalised with a long-range strike, becoming the youngest scorer in major tournament history at 16 years and 362 days.
Spain capitalised on their momentum just four minutes later when Dani Olmo navigated through the French defence and scored past Mike Maignan. Jules Kounde couldn't clear the ball off the line, allowing Spain to secure their place in Sunday's final. This defeat marked only the second time France lost after scoring first in a European Championship game, the first being a 3-2 loss to the Netherlands in 2000.

Speaking to French outlet TF1, Deschamps acknowledged Spain's superiority: "Spain proved tonight that they are a very good team. We were lucky enough to open the scoring, but they caused us difficulties because they were superior in their control. Tonight, they showed all their qualities." He also noted that his team was slower and less fresh, failing to move the ball forward effectively.
This semi-final exit is France's first since Euro 1996. Despite being pre-tournament favourites alongside England, who face the Netherlands on Wednesday for a spot in the final, France struggled to meet expectations. Kolo Muani's goal was their first non-penalty goal at Euro 2024 from open play, coming from their 87th shot attempt.
Lamine Yamal was instrumental for Spain, scoring from 25 yards out after easily bypassing Adrien Rabiot. His performance earned him UEFA's Player of the Match award. Yamal also became the youngest player to feature in a semi-final at a major tournament, surpassing Pele's record set during the 1958 World Cup.
Yamal expressed his joy after the match: "I am extremely happy to share this moment with the team; I am savouring the victory," he said via UEFA's official media channels. The Barcelona winger will turn 17 on Saturday, just one day before Spain competes in the final in Berlin.
When asked about his birthday wishes, Yamal responded: "To win, win, win. It will be a joy to celebrate my birthday in Germany with the team."
France’s elimination highlighted their inability to live up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites. Despite opening scoring through Kolo Muani’s header early on, they couldn’t maintain momentum against a dominant Spanish side led by young star Yamal.
The match underscored Spain’s tactical superiority and resilience as they advanced to face either England or the Netherlands in Berlin. Deschamps' comments reflect an acknowledgment of his team's shortcomings and Spain’s impressive display of skill and control throughout the game.
This defeat serves as a significant moment for both teams; while it marks disappointment for France, it highlights Spain’s potential as they look ahead to Sunday’s final.
