Late Merino Goal Seals Spain's Dramatic Victory Against Germany In Euro 2024
Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simon acknowledged the need to refocus after their quarter-final victory over Germany, which felt like a Euros final. Despite being two wins away from the Euro 2024 title, Spain overcame their biggest challenge by defeating the hosts 2-1 in extra time on Friday. Substitute Mikel Merino scored a decisive header in the 119th minute, following Florian Wirtz's equaliser at the end of regular time.
Simon emphasised the significance of their win, stating, "What we have achieved is historic, winning this game is like a Euros final." He added that while they celebrated, they must recover quickly for Tuesday's semi-final. Spain and Germany were among the standout teams in the tournament's first four rounds, and their clash lived up to expectations.

Mikel Merino echoed Simon's sentiments, saying, "It was the match we were all waiting for, between two of the best teams in the world." He highlighted that it could have been a World Cup or European Championship final due to the high level of play from both sides. Merino praised his team's resilience and depth.
Spain endured both physical and mental challenges in a heated match that saw 15 cards issued—the second-most in Euros history. Robin Le Normand received his second yellow card of the finals and will miss the next round. Dani Carvajal is also banned after receiving his third booking of the tournament during stoppage time.
Alvaro Morata initially appeared suspended for a card received from the bench after Merino's goal. However, UEFA later rescinded this caution. Despite these setbacks, Spain coach Luis de la Fuerte expressed confidence in his squad's depth. "Any of the 26 players are ready," he said. "Each one has his role at the right time."
De la Fuerte might also be without Pedri due to an injury from a foul by Toni Kroos that went unpunished. Pedri had to be replaced early by Dani Olmo, who contributed with a goal and an assist for Merino. De la Fuerte commented on Pedri's condition: "Pedri was in pain... I think it was a red card [for Kroos]."
Germany's Rugged Approach
The coach acknowledged Germany's tough playing style but had no complaints about their approach. "These are games like that; when you're playing for so much at this stage, you have to use all your weapons," he said. Despite injuries and suspensions, De la Fuerte remains optimistic about his team's chances.
The victory over Germany marks a significant milestone for Spain as they aim for Euro 2024 glory. With key players potentially missing and others stepping up effectively, Spain looks forward to their upcoming semi-final with renewed focus and determination.
