Southgate Uncertain On England Future Before Euro 2024 Clash With Spain

Gareth Southgate has stated that making a rational decision about his future with England before the Euro 2024 final would be impossible. The Three Lions are set to face Spain in their second consecutive Euros final on Sunday, aiming for their first major tournament victory in 58 years.

Southgate's tenure has seen England reach at least the semi-finals in three out of four major tournaments. The only exception was the 2022 World Cup, where they were defeated by France in the quarter-finals. His current contract expires in December, leading to much speculation about his future.

Southgate's Future Before Euro Final

"Emotionally, it would be impossible for me to make a logical decision at the moment on any of that because my sole focus for two years has been winning this tournament," Southgate told reporters. He added that the past five or six weeks have been a rollercoaster, and he is solely focused on preparing the team for the upcoming game.

Southgate emphasised his dedication to leading the team as he has over the last month. "I definitely took the job to try and help English football improve," he said. He acknowledged what winning would mean not just to fans but also to those involved in developing young players and running clubs at every level of English football.

Under Southgate's leadership, England's football credibility has improved globally. However, he noted that questions about their achievements will persist until they win a major trophy. "We've improved the credibility of English football in how it's perceived around the world but, ultimately, until you win that trophy then there will always be those questions both abroad and at home about what we've done," he remarked.

The uncertainty surrounding Southgate's future has been a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. Despite this, his focus remains unwavering on securing victory in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

As England prepares for this crucial match, Southgate's commitment to improving English football remains evident. His leadership has brought them close to glory multiple times, and now they stand on the brink of potentially ending a 58-year wait for a major tournament win.

The outcome of Sunday's final will undoubtedly influence discussions about Southgate's future with England. For now, his primary goal is clear: to lead his team to victory against Spain and bring home a long-awaited trophy.
