Southgate Urges England Fans To Support Team Amid Euro 2024 Criticism
Gareth Southgate has urged England fans to continue supporting the team after their goalless draw with Slovenia. Despite advancing to the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners, England's performance has been underwhelming, with only one win in their first three games and just two goals scored.
Southgate's team faced criticism following a 1-1 draw with Denmark and failed to impress against Slovenia. They dominated possession with 74%, but their expected goals (xG) tally was only 0.87. The front three of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden managed just two shots on target between them.

At the final whistle, sections of England supporters expressed their frustration by jeering and throwing empty drinks cups towards Southgate as he applauded them. Southgate empathised with the fans but asked them to direct their frustration at him rather than the players.
"I understand it. I'm not going to back away from it," he told reporters during his post-match press conference. "The most important thing is the supporters stay with the team. I understand the narrative towards me, and that's better for the team than it being towards them."
Despite dominating large periods of the contest, England's performance did not meet expectations. Southgate acknowledged that while they would have liked to score more goals, there were improvements compared to their previous game.
"We weren't able to find the right pass, the final finish. But we are improving," he said. "I think the changes we made had a positive effect on the game tonight."
Upcoming Challenges
England avoided a tougher half of the draw that includes France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal. They will face either the Netherlands or Group E's third-placed side in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday in the round of 16.
Southgate emphasised that maintaining a positive atmosphere within the camp is crucial as they aim for another deep run in this competition. "You never want to look back having not topped the group and spiral into tough matches where people can then accuse you that, because you didn't win the group, you've ended up with a tougher draw," he added.
Team Morale
The Three Lions boss highlighted that creating an enjoyable environment for players has been key over recent years. "We have made England over the last three or four years fun again," Southgate said. "I think it has been enjoyable for the players, and we have got to be very, very careful that it stays that way."
Despite some disappointing performances, England remains focused on progressing further in Euro 2024. Southgate's plea for continued support underscores his belief in his team's potential and resilience.
